“As a parent I understand how stressful it can be trying to give your child the best start in life."
– Dr. Jennifer Cohen
As a parent, I understand how stressful it can be trying to give your child the best start in life. We want our children to have the most nutritious food in their early years, but there are so many confusing messages that make it difficult for us to make the right decision. Our children are also bombarded with advertising of less healthy foods and are exposed to poorer food choices at schools, making it even harder for us to say ‘No’ to their not-so-healthy food requests.
As a working parent, I also know how timepoor we are. Having to make nutritious meals every day can be difficult and unfortunately, many schools do not have food available for purchase in a canteen. Those that do, often offer less than ideal choices, choices that contain too many additives, sugars and salts.
Our aim is to give you an easy way to provide your child with nutritious foods during term time. Why is this? Because maximising nutrition at school assists with learning, concentration and behaviour.
I want your children to enjoy their food and be exposed to a wide variety of foods from a young age. I also want to provide education and information to you to make choosing healthy foods for your children as easy as possible.
Tuckshop2U uses the Healthy Kids ‘Traffic Light System’ as a tool for parents and children to easily identify and make the healthiest food choices possible.
Each food is categorised for parents with the traffic light colour, the nutritional breakdown of the food, ingredients, allergens and a guide to whether the food is egg free, gluten free, milk free or soy free.
Red foods are those that should be limited to once a term. These foods are the highest in energy, sugar, salt and do not provide any nutritional benefits.
Amber foods should be limited, ideally, to once a week if the child desires them. These foods are generally high in energy, sugar and salt and provide less nutritional benefits than the green foods.
Green foods are lower in energy, sugar and salt and are a good source of essential nutrients.
